Transporting tourists around the
Petra Archaeological Park is the
main source of income for horse
owners in Petra. Twenty carriages
have been imported from the UK
since 1989. Only nine are still in
operation and these are beginning
to show signs of wear and tear. The
Brooke Hospital is concerned
that the remaining carriages are
beginning to fail and so we
commissioned the Silsoe Research
Institute to investigate the situation.

An investigation was carried out
which examined the kind of terrain
over which carriages were used,
how far they travelled, the design
and manufacture of the carriages,
as well as the implications of all
these factors have on the health
of the horse.

A new educational Junior Club was opened on the 1st of August 2001 at Bedoul
Village in Jordan. Bedoul Village is home to many young owners of donkeys, so
it was the ideal area. The mission of the club is to educate the young people on
basic animals management. It will teach them how to look after their donkeys, how
to keep them in good condition, how to feed them well and how to be kind and
gentle to the poor animals. It will also teach them the importance of their donkey's
drinking water and having shade from the blazing sun.
