Update on refugee crisis in Afghanistan.
The stream of Afghanistan refugees
pouring into Pakistan is constant. Other
than the 2 million already scattered around the country, over 180,000 are
reported to have arrived during the past couple of months.
Since February a mobile team from our Peshawar clinic has been
travelling
daily to the Teerah Bazaar and Gurkoh area refugee camp treating the sick
and malnourished horses, donkeys and mules of the Afghan refugees in the
area. Usually at least 70 animals are treated daily, but in just one day up to
300 animals were treated.
The main
injuries have been deep cuts and bad bruises caused by bad saddle
packs. But the strain and stress of travelling great distances under heavy loads
also show in the form of lameness.
Due to the recent events in America, we are currently monitoring
the
political situation on an ongoing daily basis. The safety of our staff
is uppermost. For now we are pleased to be able to report business
as usual.
